The supply of labour in the labour market is also influenced by our attitudes to work.
In the 1950's, many women believed that would contribute more by staying home and looking
after their children, and by maintaining the house, while their husband went out to work.
Attitudes to work have changed in the last fifty years. Many women want a paid career
of their own. This has lead to more women entering the workforce; many of whom are looking for
part time work, while their children are young.
The supply of labour is also influenced by the utility of leisure. Do you live to
work, or work to live? Many people want part-time work, because they have other interests they
wish to pursue. Many people retire at 55 years, because they put a higher value on non-paid
time than they do on paid time.
