The ''Casualisation'' of the Workforce - 20 |
|
''Casual'' employment is growing at a rapid rate in Australia. Many workers are hired by the
day, or week, or for a particular project. They are paid a loading on top of their
normal hourly rate, that is designed to cover any claims for sick leave, holiday pay, or
superannuation.
However, since these workers are often not employed all year, they often
end up with lower incomes than equivalent ''permanent'' staff. Outsourcing of staff, as
it is called, is criticised by unions and others because it effectively removes many of the
benefits staff were entitled to, when employed as ''permanent'' staff. (Unions also don't
like the fact that many ''casual'' workers don't join unions).
